Going Green

Going green and being earth-friendly is easier than you might think.  There are many little things you can do to help reduce landfill waste, clean the air, and preserve the natural landscape. These tips benefit the environment and your wallet. Being environmentally friendly is just good economics.

  1. Change regular light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL). CFL’s use 75 percent less energy and last about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb, so you’re not only saving energy but money, too. However you should remember these cannot be used with dimmers. New bulbs, expected to replace both incandesent and CFLs are called LEDs and do not waste any energy on heat. LEDs last the longest and are the most efficient but are still too expensive for everyday use. Many of these can be used in dimmers and also give off a more desirable spectrum of light.
  2. Keep the thermostat at 78 degrees in summer and 70 degrees in winter. Try using a programmable thermostat. Even adjusting your thermostat by a couple of degrees helps conserve resources. In San Francisco, where there are many older buildings with high ceilings and original charming but drafty windows it is common to heat by the room you are in. Also since the temperature rarely gets below 50 degrees or over 80 degrees it is easier to add or subtract layers of clothing.
  3.  RecycleOur City and County of San Francisco garbage company RECOLOGY offers a full range of recycling Make it easy by posting instructions at your home, along with clearly marked receptacles for newspapers, aluminum, glass and plastic.
  4.  Reduce the junk mail that is sent to you The Direct Marketing Association has a free service that allows you to opt out of catalogs and junk mail.
  5.   Use public transportation and bicycles-  San Francisco maintains the best public transit system in the West and is actively growing its dedicated bicycle transit  routes
  6.  Scout out second hand furniture. Scour Craigslist, Goodwill and other second hand outlets.
